This remarkable human skull exhibits signs of acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that occurs when the body produces too much growth hormone. When this occurs as an adult, the bones in the hands, feet, and face can disproportionately increase in size. It is a very rare condition, affecting about 3 in 1 million people. With this particular skull, the bone growth can easily be seen in the mandible. Looking at photo 2, you can see how one side of the mandible has grown larger than the other. This specimen is in phenomenal condition, with all dentition present. The calvarium is cut and secured with pins and hooks, while the mandible is articulated on springs. This outstanding specimen would be an invaluable tool for medical study, and would be a notable addition to any collection.
